One way to beat DC rushhour!

1958 Mark 6 Saracen

From DriveATank.com:

This 1958 Mark 6 Saracen is now for sale. It has only 205 miles on the clock from new! There were a group of these Saracens sold by the British MOD that were “cold war reserve” meaning they were stored in a shed and never used unless war usage required. This vehicle is equipped with the optional machine gun turret on top and has all of the modern factory updates found on Saracens of its age. It has reverse flow cooling, which pushes the hot air forward rather than into the crew compartment like many of the early models. It has the large comfortable driver’s seat with a tall back and reclines. The interior is fitted with foam insulation that is covered by vinyl to keep the crew compartment cool and quiet. This Saracen even has the “up-armor” package. This means that it was upgraded with even MORE armor by the British Government. This Saracen even has the original pick axe and shovel mounted on the fender. This Saracen is in excellent shape especially for being over 50 years old and all original! The best part of the Saracen is that they are street legal. They have headlights, turn signals, horn, and four way flashers. A Saracen can be registered as a motor vehicle or if you would rather drive on your acreage, skip that part. Either way this Saracen is sure to be 10 tons of fun.

Tiny Cars in the Big City!

The Smallest Car in the Largest City in the World (1913):

Queen Alexandra ordered a miniature Cadillac car for Crown Prince Olav (later King) of Norway and – never ones to miss an advertising opportunity – the manufacturers arranged the filming of the car’s departure from the factory, where it is waved out by an enthusiastic male crowd.

This mini marvel continues its jubilant journey through the streets of London – past the Bank of England, around Trafalgar Square and on to Hyde Park. As crowds cheer and leap in front of the camera, desperate to be preserved on film, the driver’s composure and deadpan facial expression remains one of the most entertaining aspects of this Edwardian glimpse of British pride.

The film ends with some charming footage of a tea party, in which three children run into trouble with the law for speeding!

Again, posted by the BFI. Jeremy drives the smallest car in the world at the BBC – Top Gear (2007):

Jeremy drives the Peel P-50 through central London and into the BBC offices. From Top Gear.

Leno on Top Gear

Behind the scenes with Leno:

I have to say that it was great to see Leno on Top Gear because he is one of the world’s greatest motorheads and, as I have written before, his garage is simply amazing.  To the amazement of the British audience, Jeremy Clarkson read out a portion of Leno’s collection … Read more »

A history buff’s dream car

Lot No: 229 | Capone's 1930 Armored Cadillac Imperial Sedan

Lot No: 229 | Capone's 1930 Armored Cadillac Imperial Sedan

In Bonhams Quail Lodge Automotive sale in August, an honest piece of history is being put up for auction – Al Capone’s and “The Outfit”’s (aka the Chicago Mob) 1930 Cadillac Series 452 V-16 Armored Imperial Sedan.  According to Bonhams, Lot 229 with an estimate of $250,000 – 300,000 is “something truly special” …

Its modifications mark it as something truly special. Based on a seven-passenger Imperial Sedan by Fleetwood its doors are reinforced with ¼” steel armor. All the glass is 5-ply laminated. The side windows have round ports cut in them, and they’re not for ventilation. A police band radio nestles under the dashboard conveniently above the front seat passenger’s feet. It might be a good guy’s car, except that the good guys in the Thirties couldn’t afford such luxury, performance and protection. Neither did they have much fear of assault by heavy weapons. It was the bad guys who needed this level of protection, but even at that few sought such an ostentatious and easily spotted mobile fortress. One who demanded this level of luxury, who needed this level of protection, who could afford it and who was not concerned with notoriety, being the most infamous man in Chicago if not in the world, was Al Capone, head of the legendary gang known as “The Outfit”.

The Caterham Seven

Top Gear Car of the Year 2008 - Caterham Superlight R500

Top Gear Car of the Year 2008 - Caterham Superlight R500

If the Aero SuperSport was too much, then look at the Caterham Seven.  Originally designed as the Lotus 7 by Colin Chapman over 50 years ago, Caterhams have made a name for themselves as cars for drivers!  Whether on the track or on the road, they are purely and simply, driving machines!  For an example of that, a R500, like the one pictured above, made it around the Top Gear track in 1:17.9 (currently, sixth all-time) and beat the £1 million Bugati Veryon!  Read more »

Morgan Aero SuperSports

Morgan Aero SuperSports 1

Well, this is clearly not a pedal car, but it is a new Morgan sportscar!  As another part of the Morgan centenary celebrations, they are introducing the Aero SuperSports.

Designed and engineered in house, the Morgan Aero SuperSports is a lightweight aluminium sports car with a luxurious specification. The interior features a comfortable combination of polished hardwoods, hand stitched leather and electronic technology to create a driving environment that is efficient, ergonomic and sumptuous. In spite of all this opulence the overall weight of the car is still minimal so the car is responsive to driver inputs and economical to run. The unique way Morgan can achieve this is down to our use of aircraft style superformed aluminium outer panels and the skills of our craftsmen to hand finish the assembly of each car.

Jay Leno’s Garage & Collection

In case you did not realize it, but Jay Leno has over 160 vehicles in his collection (making one of the largest collections in the world, from what I can determine).  To house them, he has built a special garage in Southern California.  His collection covers over a hundred years of automotive history and includes a handful of custom built cars.

His cars range from his first car in C alifornia to his EcoJet high-performance custom car.  But, the best part of the whole website are the videos … it is clear that Jay is crazy about cars and keeping them road worthy (or making them road worthy in some instances).  While many of the cars are not your daily drivers, a few of them would be worthy for those purchases!  My favorite would have to be the 1956 Chevy Nomad or the 1954 Dodge Coronet Suburban (video below) … Read more »

The SuperSport Junior Pedal Car from Morgan

Morgan Pedal Car

To celebrate their centenary, the Morgan Motors Company is producing a limited-edition pedal car based on their early Morgan 3 wheeler.  They are only producing 500 of these pedal cars and they cost £2,510 excluding VAT and delivery (plus, leather upholstery for £250.00, if you want it).

A Morgan for less than £3,000 is a bargain … a used 2008 Aero 8 will cost you about £70,000.  But I highly doubt that many 6 to 13 year olds (the ‘target’ age group) will ever get to pedal one of these cars down the drive.  Yet, on the other hand, this is probably the cleanest running Morgan that has been (or ever will be) produced since it doesn’t need any petrol or hydrogen* to go!
