I have to say that I enjoyed the transportation in Morocco. It was hectic at times and it appeared to be without care at points, but in many ways it was better than what we get in England. So, here are my notes about the various modes of transportation available in Morocco, ranked roughly from worst to best (as we experienced them):
By far the worst was the ferry out of Tangiers! We decided to go with the Transmediterranea fast ferry between Tangiers and Algeciras. It was supposed to take about an hour and, according to the guide book, was likely to be 30 minutes to an hour late. If only it was! The ferry was so late that by the time it had arrived, we were supposed to be in Spain. It then proceeded to take its time crossing the Straits, taking over an hour and a half. To top that off, they refused to take either Moroccan Dirhams or Debit Cards on board the ship. If we had to do it again, I will only do the trip in the early morning (we did it in the afternoon) but I would be very likely to try to find a different way to get between Spain & Morocco! A quick google search turns up very little useful information about the subject and many of the results are message boards full of opinions and little fact (some of which are years old). On the other hand, the Rough Guide to Morocco says that it is “an unsatisfactory time to travel” and that “the month-long closure of so many eating places can also make like difficult if you are dependent on restaurants to eat.”
From our experience, the Rough Guide’s opinion was wrong! Read more »
One of the great things that we were looking forward to was the food in Morroco and we had some great food while we were there!
Yet, we were slightly disappointed by some of the traditional Morrocan food – especially couscous and tajines. On the other hand, we had some great breakfasts at two of our riads and greatly enjoyed all of the fresh juice that we were able to drink. The juice carts on the Djemaa el Fna are a great source for juice, but be sure to ask for fresh and the normal price is 3dh per glass. Two pieces of advice when dealing with the vendors: 1) always ask the price first and 2) make sure that you have small change when you go to get juice because the vendors will claim to not have change. Yes, unfortunately, we had to come back from our vacation to Morroco & Spain! We had a great two weeks (or nearly that) of vacation in two amazing countries – they are places that both Jill & I want to visit again. Here is a brief summary of the trip:
Highlights:
- Riad Bayti in Marrakesh
- Badi Palace in Marrakesh
- Freshly squeezed OJ
- and many more …
Lowlights:
- Essouira
- Delayed ferry from Tangiers to Algercias
- Tajines
Anyway, I will try to get photos and more thorough descriptions up soon!
Cheers!
