I agree: hats are a look-at-me accessory, which is what makes it hard to find the balance between a hat as part of an outfit and making it look like a costume. John Galliano says in the introduction to the V&A's book on its Hats: An Anthology that he wouldn't leave the house without a hat.

It's unfortunate that hats come with so much baggage, evidenced by how confronting people find it when you wear one. I get positive comments but also the probing, "How many hats do you own?" Who would ask how many shirts one owned? Or shoes? There is an idea that hats are either functional (sun protection, in which case why do you have more than one) or an affectation.

More men in hats would solve that problem!
